WestK Ferry Begins Trial Runs Across Victoria Harbour

Hong Kong’s newest maritime transport option, the WestK Ferry, has launched an exciting four-day trial run connecting West Kowloon Quay with Central Pier No. 9, promising commuters a swift and scenic alternative across Victoria Harbour.

Starting November 10, the ferry service offers passengers an eight-minute journey with departures every half hour, immediately capturing the attention of locals and tourists alike. To generate initial interest, the ferry operator has strategically distributed around 400 to 500 free tickets during the trial period and planned a special opening weekend with 3,000 complimentary one-way tickets for adults and 500 free one-way tickets for pets on November 15 and 16.

The service is designed with passenger convenience in mind, featuring air-conditioned cabins and unique amenities that set it apart from traditional transportation options. Notably, the ferry welcomes bicycles and pets, with the upper deck specifically designated as a pet-friendly space—a feature that has already resonated with travelers like one couple who appreciated the animal-friendly policy.

Ticket pricing is structured to accommodate various passenger types. Adults can purchase tickets for HK$20, while children aged 3-11, seniors over 65, and passengers with disabilities enjoy a discounted rate of HK$10. For frequent travelers, a monthly pass is available at HK$560, and pet owners can bring their companions aboard for an additional HK$20 per pet.

Early passenger feedback provides intriguing insights into the service’s potential. A US tourist who initially planned to use the MTR between Kowloon and Central stations opted to try the ferry instead. While he noted the ride was bumpier than the iconic Star Ferry, he appreciated the scenic views and reduced travel time of approximately 10 minutes.

The WestK Ferry represents more than just a new transportation route; it’s a strategic addition to Hong Kong’s robust public transit network. By offering an alternative to potentially congested routes like the MTR during peak hours, the service aims to provide commuters with a more flexible and enjoyable travel experience.

The ferry’s introduction reflects a thoughtful approach to urban mobility, catering to diverse passenger needs. From families and seniors to pet owners and tourists, the service seems designed to accommodate a wide range of travelers. Its amenities and pricing structure suggest a commitment to accessibility and comfort.

As the trial period concludes and the service officially launches, transportation enthusiasts and daily commuters alike will be watching closely. The initial reception has been promising, with passengers expressing enthusiasm about the scenic route and convenient features. The WestK Ferry’s success could potentially reshape how Hong Kong residents and visitors traverse Victoria Harbour.
