BYD once again demonstrates its innovative strength in the new energy vehicle sector with the launch of the all-new Shark PHEV pickup truck, bringing a remarkable option to the mid-size pickup market. This model excels not only in performance but also stands out with unique advantages in technology and practicality.
The Shark’s powertrain is a highlight, featuring a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 436 horsepower and accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds. For performance enthusiasts, these figures are undoubtedly impressive. Even more noteworthy is its pure electric range of up to 100 kilometers, making it ideal for urban commuting and emission-free short trips.
In terms of dimensions, the Shark is classified as a mid-size pickup, measuring 5,457 mm in length, 1,971 mm in width, and 1,925 mm in height—slightly longer than the Chevrolet Colorado and Ford Ranger. With a payload capacity of 835 kg and a towing capacity of 2,500 kg, it can handle most practical needs. Its exterior design is clearly inspired by the Ford F-150 Lightning, featuring vertical headlights, a striking grille, and LED daytime running lights that wrap around the front, exuding a rugged aesthetic.
The tech features are equally impressive. The interior is equipped with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch rotatable central touchscreen, supporting Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and voice control. It even includes a built-in karaoke function, adding to the entertainment value. A 12-inch head-up display, 50W wireless charging, and an underbody camera further highlight the Shark’s technological edge.
Charging efficiency is another standout feature. The Shark supports fast charging, allowing the battery to go from 30% to 80% in just 20 minutes—a leading figure among PHEV models. Additionally, the vehicle offers V2L (vehicle-to-load) functionality and remote app-controlled air conditioning, significantly enhancing convenience.
In the Mexican market, the Shark starts at 899,980 pesos, approximately NT$1.727 million. While slightly pricier than the Ford Ranger, its powertrain, electric range, and tech features make it a competitive choice. However, its success in the U.S. market will be crucial to its sales performance.
BYD’s move is not only a significant attempt to enter the pickup truck market but also showcases its technological prowess and global expansion strategy in the new energy vehicle sector. Despite challenges such as potential EU tariffs on Chinese vehicles, the company remains confident and even plans to establish a second factory in Europe.
The Shark PHEV pickup undoubtedly offers consumers a compelling new option that combines performance, technology, and practicality. It highlights BYD’s innovation in the new energy vehicle space while injecting fresh competition into the global pickup market. We look forward to seeing how this model performs in international markets.
