MediaZone Interview

Q&A with Clive Wolstencroft, Founder

As part of the award feature, MediaZone interviewed our founder Clive Wolstencroft on the future of insurance broking in Hong Kong. His responses are below.

On Technology

How are disruptive technologies like AI and robo-advisors changing the industry’s landscape today?

AI has shifted from novelty to operational dependency for Hong Kong’s insurance brokers — and frankly, that creates real risk. When AI tools fail, workflows built around them grind to a halt. We draw a parallel to our own industry logic: just as you wouldn’t place all your risk with a single insurer, over-relying on AI creates a fragile operation.

There is also the danger of over-trusting algorithmic outputs. An underwriting system can misread policy language or flag a data anomaly, and without human oversight, small errors quickly become significant financial exposures. In Hong Kong’s multilingual, multi-jurisdictional environment, AI can identify patterns — but it cannot replace the experience and judgment needed to interpret them.

So no — robo-advisors are not about to replace brokers. They are a tool. A useful one. But human expertise remains the difference between getting a quote and getting properly covered.

On Regulation

How are evolving HKIA regulations affecting brokers in terms of service standards and fee transparency?

The regulatory dimension is closely tied to the technology shift. The Hong Kong Insurance Authority is actively deploying AI-powered supervisory tools, and enforcement is tightening — which, let me be honest, is no bad thing for the industry’s credibility.

CPD requirements, fee transparency, needs-based selling — these are not just box-ticking exercises. They are the foundation of the trust relationship between broker and client. We have always taken the view that proper advice is worth paying for, and that the client should always know exactly what they are paying for and why.

AML obligations have also stepped up considerably. Stronger onboarding protocols, transaction monitoring, checks on politically exposed persons — these are no longer optional. The challenge is keeping pace with a regulator that is itself going digital, while maintaining the client trust that no algorithm can replicate.

On The 35th Anniversary & What’s Next

What does Navigator’s 35th anniversary mean for the firm, and what’s next?

Thirty-five years. It is a number that surprises even me when I see it written down.

But the anniversary is not a finishing line — it is a launchpad. We did not get here by chasing scale. We got here one happy client at a time, and that is exactly how we intend to continue.

What stays the same is the obsession with doing right by the client. What changes is how we deliver it. The Navigator our clients have relied on isn’t going anywhere — it is only getting started.
