Tai Lam Tunnel: New Fares & EasyGo Launch May 31

The Tai Lam Tunnel, a crucial infrastructure component in Hong Kong, is set to undergo significant changes starting at midnight on Saturday, May 31st. The government has announced that it will take back the franchise of the tunnel, a move that will bring about new toll charges and the introduction of a modern payment system known as “EasyGo” or “Easy Access.” These changes aim to streamline the toll collection process and provide a more efficient experience for drivers.

As part of the franchise takeover, new toll charges will be implemented immediately. For private cars, the toll will vary depending on the time of day: during peak hours, drivers will pay HK$45; during normal hours, the charge will be HK$30; and during non-peak hours, it will drop to HK$18. Taxis will have a flat rate of HK$28 throughout the day, while commercial vehicles, including trucks and buses, will incur a toll of HK$43 all day. This new pricing structure is designed to reflect the varying demand for tunnel usage throughout the day, potentially easing congestion during peak times.

In conjunction with the new toll charges, the government will roll out the “EasyGo” or “Easy Access” payment system, which is a non-stop payment service aimed at enhancing the efficiency of toll collection. This system will be operational from 5:00 a.m. on the same day, allowing drivers to pass through the tolls without stopping, thereby reducing wait times and improving traffic flow.

However, to facilitate the transition to this new system, there will be temporary operational changes. The tunnel will cease operations for approximately five minutes starting at midnight to update the toll collection facilities. Following this brief closure, from 00:00 until 3:00 a.m., manual toll collection or “Autotoll” will be temporarily employed. The tunnel will then close again from 3:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. for conversion work related to the “Easy Access” system. After this period, the tunnel will reopen at 5:00 a.m., fully equipped with the new payment system.

To support the implementation of “Easy Access,” there will be phased traffic and transport arrangements in the Tai Lam Tunnel area beginning at 1:00 a.m. on Saturday. Notably, from 3:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m., both the Tai Lam Tunnel and all branch road entrances will be closed for two hours. During this time, drivers are advised to use Tuen Mun Road as an alternative route. Additionally, some overnight bus routes will need to adjust their paths to accommodate the changes.

The expected impact of these temporary closures is significant, with approximately 500 vehicles anticipated to be affected during the transition period. While the changes may cause some inconvenience in the short term, the long-term benefits of the new toll structure and payment system are expected to enhance the overall driving experience for users of the Tai Lam Tunnel.

In summary, the upcoming changes to the Tai Lam Tunnel represent a significant shift in how tolls are collected and managed. With the government taking over the franchise, implementing new charges, and introducing the “EasyGo” payment system, drivers can look forward to a more efficient and streamlined experience. However, it is essential for motorists to be aware of the temporary operational changes and plan their routes accordingly to minimize disruptions during the transition period. As these changes take effect, the hope is that they will lead to improved traffic flow and a better overall experience for all users of this vital transportation link.
