Hong Kong’s Elderly Health Care Voucher Scheme is taking a significant step forward by expanding its reach across the Greater Bay Area, offering more healthcare options for senior citizens. The recent announcement on July 7, 2025, reveals an exciting development that will provide increased medical service accessibility for eligible Hong Kong residents.
The expansion introduces four new service points across different cities in the Guangdong province. Specifically, two new locations will be added in Foshan, and one each in Zhongshan and Guangzhou. This strategic expansion brings some notable firsts, including the inclusion of a traditional Chinese medicine hospital in the pilot scheme.
Starting July 9, Zhongshan Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Guangdong Clifford Hospital in Guangzhou will become part of the program. By July 17, the First People’s Hospital of Foshan and the Eighth Affiliated Hospital of Southern Medical University will also join the initiative. These additions are carefully planned, with each hospital offering multiple departments where Elderly Health Care Vouchers (EHCVs) can be used.
The number of departments available varies across these new locations. Zhongshan Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine offers 12 departments, while Guangdong Clifford Hospital provides access to 13 departments. The First People’s Hospital of Foshan extends coverage to 14 departments, and the Eighth Affiliated Hospital of Southern Medical University tops the list with 15 departments.
One crucial detail for participants is that service fees will be denominated in Renminbi, and users must first register with eHealth to utilize the vouchers at these Greater Bay Area service points. This expansion is particularly significant as it now encompasses a traditional Chinese medicine hospital, broadening healthcare choices for elderly individuals.
The impact of this expansion is substantial. With these four new service points, the total number of locations where EHCVs can be used in the Greater Bay Area will increase to 15. This development is expected to benefit over 1.78 million eligible Hong Kong elderly people, providing them with more flexible and accessible healthcare options.
The Hong Kong SAR Government isn’t stopping here. They’ve already indicated active progression towards implementing the pilot scheme at six additional medical institutions, with further arrangements anticipated in the second half of the current year.
For eligible Hong Kong senior citizens, this expansion represents more than just additional medical facilities. It’s a meaningful step towards comprehensive healthcare access, bridging geographical gaps and offering more diverse medical service options. The inclusion of traditional Chinese medicine alongside conventional medical services demonstrates a holistic approach to elderly healthcare.
As the program continues to evolve, it showcases the government’s commitment to supporting the elderly population by providing more convenient and varied healthcare services. The Elderly Health Care Voucher Greater Bay Area Pilot Scheme is proving to be an innovative solution to healthcare accessibility for seniors, combining convenience, choice, and comprehensive medical support.
