BYD SEAL 6 Local Driving Experience: Rear-Wheel Drive and High Range Analysis

BYD is expanding its electric vehicle lineup with the sleek all-new mid-size four-door sedan, the BYD SEAL 6, poised to hit Hong Kong’s market in 2025. This latest model offers consumers a compelling blend of performance and practicality.

Available in two variants—the Essential (entry-level) and Premium (top-tier)—starting at HK$158,000 and HK$178,000, respectively, under the “EV First-Time Tax Concession Scheme,” the SEAL 6 presents strong value in the mid-size sedan segment. While marketed domestically as the Qin L EV, BYD has opted for the SEAL 6 branding overseas, likely due to its “Ocean Aesthetics” design theme.

The car’s exterior boasts dynamic styling with “Dragon Face” elements, sharp LED headlights, a full-width taillight bar, and hidden door handles. Its 18-inch low-drag wheels contribute to an impressive drag coefficient of 0.25Cd, enhancing both aesthetics and efficiency. Measuring 4,720mm long, 1,860mm wide, and 1,495mm tall, with a generous 2,820mm wheelbase, the SEAL 6 mirrors the proportions of its SEAL EV sibling.

Under the hood (or rather, battery pack), the SEAL 6 adopts a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) layout—a rare feature in its class—promising superior driving dynamics. The Essential model is equipped with a 46.08kWh Blade LFP battery, delivering 130hp and 220Nm, with an NEDC range of 410km. Meanwhile, the Premium upgrades to a 56.64kWh battery, producing 218hp and 330Nm, enabling a 0-100km/h sprint in just 7.5 seconds and extending its NEDC range to 485km.

Charging is hassle-free, supporting 150kW DC fast charging, which can juice up the battery from 30% to 80% in roughly 30 minutes. It also features V2L (vehicle-to-load) power output, adding versatility. Despite tipping the scales at 1,800kg, its tuned front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link suspension ensure a balanced ride—comfortable yet sporty. With a tight 5.4m turning radius, the SEAL 6 is tailor-made for Hong Kong’s twisty roads.

Inside, the Premium variant spoils occupants with synthetic leather seats, ventilated front seats, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen supporting Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth. Additional comforts include dual-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, ambient lighting, Hi BYD voice assistant, and DiPilot ADAS. Practicality shines with 65L of front trunk storage (waterproof!) and a cavernous 460L rear trunk, expandable via folding rear seats.

Drivers can choose between Eco, Normal, Sport, and Snowfield modes, while steering and brake assist offer Standard or Sport customization. For those seeking affordability, tech, and driving engagement, the BYD SEAL 6 is shaping up to be a standout option—showcasing BYD’s EV prowess while potentially accelerating its Hong Kong growth.
