Researchers at the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) have developed a groundbreaking smart vest designed to help children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) improve their focus and classroom behavior. This cutting-edge technology represents a significant breakthrough in supporting students who struggle with hyperactivity and attention challenges.
The smart vest is a marvel of technological innovation, combining artificial intelligence with practical design to address the unique needs of children with ADHD. Developed in collaboration with the Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel, the vest features advanced sensors capable of identifying 14 different classroom and hyperactive behaviors. The AI system behind this technology was meticulously trained using an impressive 147,000 simulated behavior samples, enabling it to detect specific movements associated with hyperactivity with remarkable precision.
When the vest identifies hyperactive behavior, it doesn’t rely on intrusive interventions. Instead, small motors embedded within the garment produce a gentle vibration—similar to a mobile phone notification—that serves as a subtle reminder for the child to self-regulate and refocus. This approach is particularly innovative, as it provides real-time feedback without drawing undue attention or causing embarrassment.
The effectiveness of the smart vest was rigorously tested through simulated classroom trials involving more than 40 primary school students aged between 7 and 12 years. The results were remarkably promising. After receiving vibration prompts, students demonstrated significant improvements in behavior and focus. Hyperactive movements decreased by an impressive 24 to 54 percent, while adherence to classroom rules and overall focus improved by 10 to 15 percent.
Perhaps most importantly, the children reported no significant discomfort while wearing the vest, suggesting that the technology is both practical and user-friendly. This is crucial, as any assistive technology must be comfortable and non-intrusive to be truly effective.
Led by Associate Professor Fu Hong, the research team is now moving forward with the next phase of development. They are currently recruiting students for additional classroom testing to further refine the technology and ensure its effectiveness across various educational settings. The team’s goal is to bring the smart vest to market within the next two years, potentially providing a revolutionary tool for managing ADHD symptoms.
