AXA
AXA General Insurance HK Ltd is the descendant of a venerable British general insurance company called ‘Guardian Insurance Ltd’ which had operated many years in HK as ‘Union Insurance Society of Canton‘. A company first established in the 1870s, Axa General is one of the top ten General insurers in HK and has probably the largest share of Comprehensive Motor insurance in Hong Kong. It is especially well known for its famous HKD1.00 excess on certain models of Mercedes. For Domestic Helper cover Axa General has also pioneered providing up to HKD100,000 in cancer cover in its SmartHelper plans, in a market which had traditionally shunned providing any such cover.
AXA China Region Ltd is predominantly a life insurance company known previously as ‘National Mutual’ which is a leading insurer in Hong Kong and Macau for over 20 years. AXA China Region is one of the largest life insurers in Hong Kong. AXA Wealth Management (Hong Kong) Limited is meanwhile the rebranded successor to Winterthur Life (Hong Kong) Limited. Axa China Region has a combined Disability (Permanent Health Insurance), Critical Illness (Dread Disease) and term life policy especially popular among expatriates in Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, India, Malaysia and Thailand.
The Axa companies in HK are part of the Axa group network with income of around EU100m and over 100,000 employees worldwide.
Bupa
The name BUPA is synonymous with health care since it started in the UK in 1947. Now with over 10,000,000 members worldwide, is one of the largest medical insurance groups in the world.
BUPA or British United Provident Association as it is first began, has now branched out and adopted many different names, according to the local region or service it operates in.
In Hong Kong Bupa trades as Bupa Asia Ltd which offes a programme of health products tailored to the local market, such as Bupa Care, Bupa Pro and Bupa Crystal to name a few.
In the expat market though note that the reference is normally to Bupa International or IHI Bupa Ltd, a merger between Bupa and Danish insurer IHI. Their latest offering is the Worldwide Options international health plan.
Transamerica
Transamerica Life Insurance Company is the successor-in-interest to Transamerica Occidental Life Insurance Company, which established its first sales office in Shanghai in 1933. Transamerica companies have conducted business in Hong Kong since 1947, and has had a full-service branch office in Hong Kong since 1993, where insurance is now provided by Transamerica Life Bermuda ‘Transmerica’.
Transamerica operates in the broker market and does not employ agents. Transamerica offers some of the lowest term life plans (guaranteed to age 95) in the market but interestingly refuses to insure Americans or anyone who does not come physically to Hong Kong to have their medical exam. The reason for not insuring US Nationals is not divulged by Transamerica, but our expectation is that as rates in HK are 25%-100% more than US plans, US passport holders, if their health is still good, probably cancel their cover on return to the US and Transamerica figures this is not good business!
